The Reader’s Workshop portion of our day involves individual reading of books that your student chooses and then responds to their reading in a variety of ways showing comprehension of the fiction or non-fiction text in their Reader’s Response Notebooks. For that reason, it is imperative that your student comes prepared to class each day with chapter book. It can come from our classroom library, from the school’s media center, from home or from the public library. Workshop includes whole class mini-lessons on specific reading skills followed by individual practice and sharing. There is also small group guided reading where the teacher meets with a group either at their reading level or in regard to a specific reading skill they are struggling with. Q.R.I. and DRA testing will be completed in the first week of school which will assist us in knowing the grade level your student is currently reading at so we can help them on their own level. Students will also complete the district NWEA assessment for reading in the fall and winter to monitor academic gains.

The Writing Workshop portion of our day includes writing to specific prompts including a personal narrative, a persuasive writing piece, a fictional piece, poetry and a research paper. Students learn about each step of the writing process including brainstorming, rough draft, revising (changing the content), editing (improving the grammar, spelling, etc.) and publishing, which can include presenting the final piece to the class for a Listening & Speaking grade. Students' writing notebooks are organized into three sections: ideas, drafts, and free writing. This notebook will become a collection of students' thoughts and ideas, rough drafts, free choice writing pieces composed throughout the school year.
